So we love Tim Gunn to pieces. Like literal pieces. Like Yoko Ono Cut Piece, we just want to snip off little pieces of his suit and absorb that Tim Gunn essence. He’s quintessentially bitchy yet never mean-spirited. He’s insanely stylish and is probably singlehandedly responsible for making people feel confident they could rock an exploded gingham shirt and still look dressy.
We would be quite happy to actually be Tim Gunn, or to learn how to be Tim Gunn, so we were excited by this new Lifetime series that would maybe teach us how to be Tim Gunn? We are disappoint to find out that it is not tips and tricks from Tim, but is instead basically a fashion version of The Voice.
Lifetime says the first two episode will feature Gunn “presenting a challenge to the fashion hopefuls as [Project Runway alums] Mondo, Anya and Nick measure the skill level of the contestants and duke it out to determine which four designers will land on their teams.” Here’s what else the cable net says: “in the subsequent episodes, Tim will present new challenges that will test the mentors’ ability to bring out the best in their designers as they guide them through the competition. While the designers are whittled down during the season, only the most talented and creative individuals will survive to compete in the finale, where one designer – and one mentor – will be deemed the winners of Under the Gunn.
That does not sound nearly as good as our reality show idea where we just go shopping and drink espressos and aperitifs with Tim Gunn. This sounds like it will be too much coaching, too little Tim Gunn. Will we watch it anyway? Oh sweet jesus yes, because it is Tim Gunn without any pesky added Michael Kors, which is itself a gift from the heavens.
Under The Gunn starts in January 2014.
